Corrales-Nelson Leads Bears On First Day At Don Kirby
Cal Collects Nine Personal Bests To Open Competition.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – California track & field opened the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Thursday, collecting nine new personal bests and a top-three indoor time in Golden Bear women's 200-meter history.
Zion Corrales-Nelson posted the third-best indoor time in California history in the women's 200-meters, powering past the finish line in an indoor personal record time of 23.97 seconds. Teammate
Kennedy Williams took first in her heat, running a new personal best time of 24.42 seconds while
Ezinne Abba won her heat with a new personal record of 24.75 seconds.
Hakim McMorris set a new personal record in the long jump, posting a farthest leap of 7.31 meters (23-11 ¾) to take first in his flight and fifth overall in the competition. Teammate
Jared Geredes finished just behind McMorris, notching a jump of 7.06 meters (23-2), good enough for 10
th-place overall.
In the men's pole vault,
Skyler Magula cleared a top height of 4.77 meters (15-7 ¾) to record a new personal best and finish as the second-best collegian in the event.
Amari Turner made it over the bar at 3.86 meters (12-8) to finish seventh in the women's pole vault competition.
Shyann Franklin posted the top mark of her first season in the women's weight throw, recording a throw of 16.22 meters (53-2 ¾) to finish first in her flight and 22
nd overall. Franklin's mark was the second-best among freshmen in the event.
Another personal record came from
Windy Margerum in the women's long jump as she posted a farthest leap of 5.72 meters (18-9 ¼) to take second in her flight and finish 15
th overall.
Moving to the men's sprints,
Adam Saleh set a new personal best in the men's 200-meters, crossing the line in 21.77 seconds to take 17
th overall. Nico Bland finished with a time of 21.98 seconds.
The Bears return to action Friday at the Don Kirby Invitational, beginning at 7:30 a.m. PST with the women's shot put competition. Cal distance runners compete over the weekend at the UW Invitational in Seattle.
