LONG BEACH, Calif. – California's season opener had no shortage of drama as the Bears suffered a 3-2 loss to Long Beach State in 13 innings at Blair Field on Friday night.
After Cal (0-1) tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the eighth and claimed a 2-1 lead in the top of the 13th, the host Dirtbags (1-0) delivered the final blow with two runs in the home half of the 13th. Cal's pitching staff struck out 13 batters on the night, including six by sophomore
Nick Proctor, while
Cole Elvis tallied a career-best three hits (3-for-5).
Jacob Hughey tallied Long Beach State's game-winning hit down the left-field line to score Calvin Estrada, who tied the contest in the previous at bat with a two-out RBI double to the right-field corner. Just a half inning earlier, Cal had claimed its only lead of the night when
Darren Baker reached on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Baker provided heroics earlier in the eighth when he lashed a game-tying RBI triple to center field that scored Elvis from second base. Both teams went scoreless through the first 6.5 frames before LBSU capitalized on a throwing error by
Quentin Selma in the bottom of the seventh. The error put a Dirtbag runner on second base with one out, which was followed by an infield single and muffed throw at first base, allowing LBSU to score an unearned run.
Cal starting pitcher
Sam Stoutenborough was strong through six innings of work, as he held the Dirtbags scoreless while working around four hits and four walks. He tallied three strikeouts including one against the final batter he faced, which left three LBSU runners on base to end the sixth.
The Bears had multiple offensive opportunities throughout; they left 10 runners on base including a pair in the top of the 10th after loading the bases with no outs.
