Six-Run Fourth Inning Lifts Cal To 9-0 Win over Saint Mary's

Five Bears Picked Up Multiple Hits In Friday's First Game

FRESNO, Calif. - Chloe Romero threw a complete game shutout and a six-run fourth inning boosted the Cal softball team over Saint Mary's, 9-0 (5 innings), in the opener of the Fresno State Kickoff Invitational on Friday at Margie Wright Diamond on the Fresno State campus.

The Golden Bears improved to 4-2 on the year, and are currently enjoying a three-game winning streak.

Cal broke the game open in the fourth with six runs that came from some timely hitting and thanks in part to some Saint Mary's miscues. Already leading 2-0, Amani Bradley blooped a double for her second hit of the day - and third time reaching base - to set the table for Cameron Kondo who blasted her first career home run to make it 4-0, Bears. Later in the inning, back-to-back singles by Makena Smith and Kacey Zobac put runners on the corners with one out. Mikayla Coelho kept the hit parade going with an RBI single that brought home Smith to make it 5-0. The Bears weren't done yet as Kennedy Thomas reached on an error that allowed Zobac to cross the plate and make it 6-0, Bears. Next up was D'Asha Saiki who singled home Coelho. Another Gaels' error off the bat of Karlee Sparacino sent home Cal's eighth run of the day and the sixth of the inning.

Romero took care of business in the circle with four strikeouts through the first two innings. She compiled seven strikeouts on the day in five innings of work. Only one Gael reached base by a hit batter until there was one out in the fifth.

In the first inning. Bradley extended her hitting streak to six games with a leadoff infield single to start the game. After she walked to open the third, Bradley showed her speed once again, stealing second. A single by Lauren Espalin moved Bradley over to third before a sacrifice fly by Smith drove her home for the first run of the game.

Later in the third, with the bases loaded, an illegal pitch by Saint Mary's plated another Cal run. Thomas got credit for a walk and an RBI in the sequence.

Cal added its last run of the day in the fifth when Kondo scored her second run of the day on sac fly to make it 9-0.

Bradley, Smith, Zobac, Coelho and Saiki all notched two hits on the day

Friday morning's contest was game 1 of a doubleheader for Cal. The Bears return to the diamond at 2:30 pm to face Fordham. Cal will square off against Saint Mary's again in this tournament on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
