FRESNO, Calif. - A bases-clearing triple in the second inning capped a five-run frame that propelled Fresno State over the California softball team, 9-3, Saturday night in the Fresno State Kickoff Invitational at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Golden Bears fell to 6-3 on the year, and the loss snapped Cal's five-game winning streak.
Fresno State (7-2) struck first in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, an infield single that was just out of
D'Asha Saiki's reach allowed the first run of the game to come home.
Alexandra Perez struck out the next batter to limit the damage to one run.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the second inning when Schuylar Broussard knocked a bases-clearing triple. Fresno State totaled five runs in the decisive inning.
Lauren Espalin got the Bears on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI triple after
Kacey Zobac singled to start the inning.
Mikayla Coelho followed that up with a single of her own, bringing home Espalin and cutting the Fresno State lead to five at 7-2.
Makena Smith laced a single for the first hit of the game in the first inning. Smith has now hit safely in each game of this tournament and is riding a four-game hitting streak.
Smith wasn't done at the plate after the first. In the top of the fifth, after a walk by
Kennedy Thomas, Smith ripped a double to the wall that set Cal up with runners in scoring position and one out. Zobac sent Thomas home with a sacrifice fly that made it 7-3.
A triple and a sac fly in the fifth added to the Bulldog's lead to make it 8-3 before a home run in the bottom of the sixth made it 9-3.
Besides Smith at first base, the rest of the Bears' infield were all true freshmen - Thomas at shortstop, Zobac at catcher, Saiki at second and
