Bears Prevail In Thriller Against Utes

Cal Tops Utah 88-74 On The Road

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Cal women's basketball team withstood a second-half comeback to close its road trip on a high note, beating Utah, 88-74, on Sunday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. The Golden Bears (10-15, 2-12 Pac-12) secured the season split with the Utes (12-13, 5-9 Pac-12) and picked up their second Pac-12 road win of the year. Cal saw a 16-point lead disappear in the third quarter, but responded down the stretch to come away with its first win in Salt Lake City since 2014.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Golden Bears, led by a career-high 26 points from freshman guard Cailyn Crocker, who made her first collegiate start. Alaysia Styles added a career-high 19 points for the Bears while Jazlen Green (17 points) and Jaelyn Brown (10 points) also scored in double-figures.

Dru Gylten led Utah with 21 points.

Crocker, who celebrated her 19th birthday on Saturday, scored 20 of her game-high 26 points in the second half and finished the game 8-for-10 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the foul line. She also posted a career-best five assists and added six rebounds.

With both teams looking to rebound from losses on Friday night, the early stages of the first quarter saw six lead changes before Cal gained separation with a 6-0 run to close the quarter.

The Bears continued their momentum and extended the run to 13-0 midway through the second. Styles –who scored eight points in Friday's loss at Colorado – scored nine of the Bears' 13 points during the run and went a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor in the first half. A forward from San Diego, Styles entered Sunday averaging 8.9 points per game on the season, but nearly doubled that total with 16 points in the first half alone.

While Styles established herself on the interior, Green got to work from beyond the arc. The freshman guard went 4-for-6 from three-point range in first half, including a streak of three consecutive made three-pointers in the second quarter.

Cal committed just five turnovers in the first half and took its largest lead of the day at 48-32 after a driving layup by Green.

Cal took a 48-36 lead into the locker room, but the Utes stormed right back with an 11-1 run in the early minutes of the second half. Utah reclaimed the lead at 58-57 after a three-point by Maxwell, but Cal reclaimed the momentum after a 5-0 run to close the third quarter.

Cal built its cushion back up to nine after a pair of free throws from Crocker. Utah got back within five with 3:34 to play, but the Bears finished the game on a 13-3 run and went 10-for-10 from the foul line over the last three minutes of action.

Cal shot 79 percent (23-29) from the charity stripe on the day, and 50 percent (7-14) from three on the day. The Bears committed just nine turnovers on the day and held a 24-14 advantage over the Utes in fastbreak points.

The Bears return to Berkeley next weekend for their final homestand of the 2019-20 season. Cal hosts No. 3 Oregon (23-2, 12-1 Pac-12) at 6 p.m. PT on Friday, February 21, before closing the home slate on Sunday at 2 p.m. PT against No. 11 Oregon State (19-6, 7-6 Pac-12). The Bears will honor their graduating seniors – Sara Anastasieska, Jaelyn Brown, Mi'Cole Cayton, CJ West, and Chen Yue – following the matchup with the Beavers, with the annual senior celebration to follow the game.
