CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Defensive miscues contributed to a five-run fourth inning, and Nebraska defeated the California softball team, 8-2, in the second game of a doubleheader at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday at the Big League Dreams Complex.

The Golden Bears fell to 8-6 on the year.

Makena Smith got it done in both games on Saturday. Against Nebraska and Missouri, she posted three-hit games. They were the fourth and fifth three-hit performances of her career and her first two in 2020. Smith, who went 3-for-4 in both games, picked up an RBI double in the fifth after singling in her previous two at-bats against the Cornhuskers. She is currently enjoying a nine-game hitting streak.

The Cornhuskers struck first in the top of the third with a two-run home run. Nebraska broke the game open in the top of the fourth with five runs after multiple Cal errors in the field.

Cal got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. A double by Mikayla Coelho put runners in scoring position. It was Coelho's second hit of the game after she singled in the second to give her a team-best 10-game hitting streak. The next batter, Kacey Zobac, reached on an error, which plated the first Bear of the game.

Cal concludes play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Sunday against New Mexico at 11:30 am.
