BERKELEY – Cal (2-2) won its second straight game and completed an East Coast road sweep with an 11-7 win over Winthrop (0-3) in a non-conference Sunday at Eagle Field.
"These were huge road wins," head coach
Brooke Eubanks said. "It's never easy to fly across the country early in the season and take home two wins. We were able to grind out those games and put together final pieces against two competitive teams."
Eight different Golden Bears were part of the scoring including seven that scored goals. The quartet of
Quinnlyn Mason,
Megan Mix,
Susie Ropp and
Nikki Zaccaro led the way with two goals each and all but Mason added an assist.
Marisa Kuberra,
Catherine Roxas and
Ashley Ward had one goal apiece, while Roxas and
Ella Annest each had one assist.
"It's nice to be able to have upwards of six of seven consistent threats and goal scorers every game," Zaccaro said. "Today, in particular, we played very unselfish and all seven people on attack had to do their job to open things up."
"Our attack today was really able to expose the openings in Winthrop's defense and in turn we were able to convert our opportunities into points," Mason added.
Cal's defense also held its opponent to 10 or fewer points for the third time in four outings this season with
Makayla Ward recording double digits in saves also for the third time.
"The defense has done an awesome job of working together," Ropp said. "We are strong in every aspect and Makayla has done a great job of helping with communication and in goal making some crucial saves."
Sunday's win had some similarities to Friday's victory at Mercer with the Bears jumping out to fast starts and then thwarting a comeback attempt from the home team in both contests. The Bears scored the first three goals on Sunday with tallies from Mason (27:52), Mix (24:21) and Ropp (21:04) within the first nine minutes. Mix also assisted on Mason's goal, while
Ella Annest had her first assist of the season on Ropp's score.
Winthrop's Lauren Asher and McKenna Blick scored the only other two goals in the first half at 13:20 and 9:46 to cut Cal's lead to 3-2 at the break. Bianca Tedesco assisted on both scores.
Cal answered by starting the second half with three consecutive goals from Mix (26:57),
Marisa Kuberra (25:53) and Ropp (22:36) over a span of four minutes and 21 seconds that put the Bears ahead 6-3. Ropp assisted on Kuberra's goal and Zaccaro on the goal by Kuberra.
Winthrop battled back by scoring three of the game's next four goals but never led. Asher scored the first goal during the stretch at 21:46 but Mason answered it less than a minute later at 20:55. Mia Creighton scored the next two goals to cut a 7-3 Cal lead in half but the Eagles could get no closer the rest of the way. All four goals during the stretch were unassisted.
Catherine Roxas (14:31) and
Ashley Ward (12:14) would get the Bears' lead back to four by scoring the next two goals. Roxas' goal was unassisted while she provided the assist on Ward's score.
Creighton and Zaccaro would trade goals the remainder of the way with Creighton scoring at 10:17 and 6:39, while Zaccaro tallied at 8:11 and 3:10. Alyssa Angelo and Asher provided assists on Creighton's goals while both of Zaccaro's scores were unassisted.
The win was Cal's fifth in a row in a game played in the Eastern Time Zone dating back to 2018.
"It's really nice to come back from the East Coast with these two victories," Zaccaro said. "A lot of us have family here so we had a lot of support, so it's nice to win for them."
Cal will resume its five-game road trip on Friday at San Diego State (5 pm PT).
