MIAMI - The California softball team didn't wait long to open up the offense in the first game of Friday's doubleheader at the Felsberg Invitational on the Florida International campus at Felsberg Field. Capped by
Kacey Zobac's first career home run, the Golden Bears posted 10 runs in the first two innings, en route to an 11-6 victory over Michigan State.Â
The Golden Bears improved to 1-1 on the season.Â
After Michigan State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Bears got the break they needed to provide a spark when
D'Asha Saiki reached on an error that would have ended the inning without any runs scored.
Karlee Sparacino tied the game with a double that brought home
Lauren Espalin. An infield single by
Amani Bradley brought Saiki home to make it 2-0. After Bradley stole second,
Kennedy Thomas recorded a double that scored Sparacino and Bradley. Zobac's homer made it a six-run inning for the Bears.Â
"I was very impressed because we had some new players playing for the first time today," head coach
Diane Ninemire said. "One of the players that I was particularly impressed with today was Kasey Zobac behind the plate. She did an excellent job with pitch selection and no moment ever became too big for her. She took it in stride and was very calm, cool and collected. She delivered some big hits for us today too."
The scoring continued in the second inning. Mikalya Coelho singled home
Makena Smith. Later in the inning, Thomas walked with the bases loaded. Zobac earned the exclamation mark in this inning, as well, slapping a two-run single to put Cal up, 10-1, in the second inning.Â
Zobac, Bradley, Coelho and Smith all collected two hits each. Coelho posted two RBI, singling in Smith in the second and third innings.Â
Michigan State got back in the game briefly with a grand slam in the third inning.Â
In the second game of the doubleheader on Friday, Cal lost to Penn State, 3-2, when the Nittany Lions walked off in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double.
