QUICK HITS
- Cal is in the midst of a four-game losing streak. All four losses came against nationally-ranked opponents, No. 21 TCU (Feb. 28-March 1) and No. 10 Michigan (March 4).
- Despite an 0-3 record, sophomore Grant Holman has been Cal's most effective weekend starter. The righty posted career-highs of 6.2 innings and seven strikeouts last Saturday at TCU. In his three starts, the Bears have mustered just one total run offensively.
- Darren Baker tied a career high with three hits on Wednesday against Michigan. He is pacing Cal with a .313 (15-for-48) batting average and has five multi-hit performances.
- Cal's crop of talented freshmen have continued to play a major role this season. Five freshmen have started at least three games in the field including Nathan Martorella (10 starts) Keshawn Ogans (eight starts) and Dylan Beavers (six starts). On the mound, five freshmen have logged a total of 30.1 innings. Joseph King has been a standout on the pitching staff (1.17 ERA, 7.2 innings, 12 strikeouts).
SCOUTING THE DONS
Cal has dominated its extensive all-time series with San Francisco, owning a 124-55 record while winning eight of the last 10 games between the two programs. The Bears have won five straight contests against the Dons dating back to 2017, including a 10-7 win in Berkeley and a 10-5 win in San Francisco last year. Both of the Dons' most recent victories have been played in San Francisco.
Â
Cal and San Francisco have not played a three-game weekend series since before 2000.
Â
The Dons earned their first weekend series victory over Cal State Fullerton on the road last weekend and most recently notched a pair of midweek wins over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday and Wednesday. Harris Williams is pacing San Francisco with a .385 batting average (10-for-26) while Jack Winkler has driven in 10 runs. On the mound, a trio of right-handers (Landen Bourassa, Riley Ornido and Grant Nechak) will start this weekend.
