HARRISONBURG, Va. - Led by three hits and five RBI from
Cameron Kondo, the California softball team kick-started the
Tammy Lohmann era with a 16-8 five-inning victory over Siena Friday at the JMU Dukes Invitational from Veterans Memorial Park on the James Madison campus.
The Golden Bears improved to 11-9 on the year. The 16 runs scored were a season best for the Bears.
Cal jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
Kacey Zobac started things off for Cal when she ripped a two-run double, scoring
Makena Smith and
Mikayla Coelho. Coelho singled to extend her hitting streak to a team-best 16 games.
The Bears batted around in the opening frame. In addition to Zobac's blast,
Nicole Hammoude ripped one off the wall for a two-run double. Kondo notched an RBI single to add to the big first inning.
In addition to Kondo's big day at the plate, Coelho also notched three hits with two RBI and two runs scored.
After the Saints got two runs back in the bottom of the first, Cal loaded the bases in the second inning for
Candace Yingling who reached on an error that brought home two runs. Kondo picked up her second RBI single, part of a four-run second inning.
Kondo blasted a three-run homer to cap off a six-run third inning, making the score, 15-2, Cal.
D'Asha Saiki added to the big lead with an RBI double in the top of the fifth for the Bears' 16th run.
The Bears play their second game of Friday's double header at approximately 2 pm PT against James Madison
