Cal Opens Outdoor Season With Victories
Bears Collect 11 Wins Saturday At Cal Opener.
BERKELEY – California track & field opened the outdoor season with 11 wins, including a trio of victories from sprinter
Zion Corrales Nelson at the Cal Opener Saturday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
The Bears were able to get several newcomers their first action in the Blue and Gold, while giving veterans a first-chance crack at the outdoor season in different events. The competition included UC Davis, Saint Mary's, USF and Santa Clara.
Cal swept the top-five spots in the women's 400-meter dash with Corrales Nelson first win of the day (55.85), followed by
Sara East (56.64),
Ezinne Abba (59.15),
Jenea Spinks (59.40) and
Kennedy Williams (59.55).
The Bears got their first win of the day in the first event, before rain caused an hour delay of the field events. Freshman
Jasmine Blair set a new personal-best with a top throw of 52.89 meters (173-06) to take the hammer throw title.
Two other Golden Bear women picked up their first event wins as
Krissy Smoot grabbed the shot put crown with a top throw of 13.15 meters (43-01.75) and
Tierni Kaufman won the high jump with a top height of 1.59 meters (5-02.50).
On the men's side,
Adam Saleh took first in the 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 10.85 seconds and
DeAndra McDaniel won the triple jump crown with a farthest leap of 14.14 meters (46-04.75).
Cal won three of the four relays on the day, taking the victory in the women's 4x100, women's 4x400 and the men's 4x400.
Closing the indoor season next week,
McKay Johnson and
Joshua Johnson compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 13-14 in Albuquerque, N.M. looking to bring back a men's shot put title.
The Bears return to outdoor action March 20-21 with the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento and the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
