Flemer Promoted

Former Cal Standout Elevated To Full-Time Assistant Coach

BERKELEY – Former California baseball standout Matt Flemer has been promoted from volunteer assistant coach to assistant coach after serving in the former role for the past two seasons.

"Matt did an outstanding job as our volunteer assistant coach the last two years and I'm thrilled to keep him in Berkeley," Cal head coach Mike Neu said. "He carries a great understanding of what it takes to be successful at Cal, both as a coach and as an alumnus of the program. I'm looking forward to Matt's continued growth as a coach and his positive impact on our team."

Since joining the Golden Bears coaching staff as a volunteer assistant ahead of the 2019 season, Flemer has worked closely with the team's pitchers. In his first season, Flemer guided a pitching staff that posted a 4.29 earned run average and held opposing batters to a .258 average against. His efforts helped propel the Bears to a 32-win season and an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Fayetteville (Ark.) Regional.

In the shortened 16-game 2020 campaign, Flemer oversaw a young pitching staff that was anchored by a trio of sophomores on the weekend rotation and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American in Joseph King.

"I'm really excited for the opportunity to continue coaching at Cal," Flemer said. "I want to thank Mike and the rest of the staff for giving me the chance to be a part of a place and a program that I care about so much. Having been here the past two years, I've seen where this program is heading and I couldn't ask for a better situation. I'm looking forward to getting our student-athletes back to Berkeley and putting in the work to build a successful 2021 season."

Flemer returned to Cal after a seven-year professional career that saw him reach the Triple-A level within the Colorado Rockies organization. He totaled 139 games pitched and had a 43-40 record, 4.42 ERA and nearly 700 innings pitched throughout his minor-league career.

Best remembered in Bear Territory as a crucial contributor during Cal's storybook run to the 2011 College World Series, Flemer served as the Bears' top option at the back of the bullpen. The right-handed pitcher from El Cerrito, Calif. went 4-2 with a 1.83 ERA and six saves in a team-high 30 appearances in 2011. As a senior in 2012, Flemer went 7-5 with a 2.58 ERA and 111.2 innings pitched. He finished his Cal career with 80 appearances and 233.1 innings pitched on the mound.
