Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bears Fall To No. 11 Ducks

Onyiah Led The Bears With 13 Points, Seven Rebounds And Three Blocks

BERKELEY - The California women's basketball team fell to No. 11 Oregon Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion in their first home game of the new year.

"I think we've established ourselves as a team that continues to play hard regardless of the circumstances," head coach Charmin Smith said. "It's just a matter of figuring out how to be better at executing and getting more of what we want throughout the game."

In her fourth consecutive start, freshman forward Ugonne (Michelle) Onyiah led the team with 13 points on 6-for-9 (66.6 percent) shooting, seven rebounds and a career-high three blocks. This was her third time scoring in double figures over the last four games. During that time, she is averaging 10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.25 blocks.

"We can play hard for all 40 minutes," Onyiah said. "We're growing with every game and getting better and better."

Sophomore forward Evelien Lutje Schipholt scored in double figures for the fourth time this season, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds for the Bears (0-10, 0-7 Pac-12).

The Ducks (9-2, 7-2 Pac-12) were led by redshirt-sophomore Nyara Sabally, freshman guard Te-Hina Paopao and junior guard Taylor Chavez with 13 points each.

Next up, the Bears continue Pac-12 play as they travel to Colorado on Friday, Jan. 15 at 2:30 PM PST and Utah on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 11 AM PST. Both games will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
