Five Bears Earn Pac-12 Honors
Smith, Anderson, Collins, Lema And Oke Honored By The Pac-12
SAN FRANCISCO - California women's soccer had five players honored by the Pac-12 when the conference announced their end of year awards on Friday.
Emily Smith was named to the All-Conference Second Team while
Sydney Collins and
Angelina Anderson earned third team honors.
Karlie Lema and
Ayo Oke were both named to the All-Freshman Team.
"The Pac-12 is a very special soccer conference with incredible talent across all the schools," head coach
Neil McGuire said. "To be recognized as one of the best in this conference has to be earned. Emily, Angie, Sydney, Ayo and Karlie all performed to a very high level this season and should be very proud of themselves."
This is the fourth time that Smith has earned a place on the Pac-12's All-Conference team. She was named to the first team in 2019 and earned third team honors in both 2017 and 2020. Smith was a constant in Cal's defense as she started all 18 games and led the Bears in minutes. The Los Gatos native played 1,712 minutes, only coming out at the end of Cal's season opener vs. UCSD. Otherwise the fifth-year senior marshalled a Bears defense that allowed less than a goal per game and recorded seven shutouts. Smith was selected in the 2021 NWSL Draft by Racing Louisville and will join up with them for the 2022 season.
"We send Emily off with our best wishes as she heads into her professional career in the NWSL, and we look forward to the others returning to continue our progress as a program," McGuire said.
Collins was often paired with Smith at center back, helping lead Cal's defense. The senior from Beaverton, Oregon was named to an All-Conference team for the first time in her career. In addition to starting all 17 games she played this year, Collins led the team with four assists. Her four points on the year tied for third on the team. She recorded 1,554 minutes this year, fourth-best on the team.
Anderson was named to the All-Pac-12 team for the third straight year, every season of her Cal career. The Danville native was a first team selection and Goalkeeper of the Year in 2019, she followed that with second-team honors in 2020 and third team honors this year. Anderson recorded seven shutouts this year, making 46 saves in the process. She sits in fifth place in school history with 200 career saves and is tied for fourth with 20 career shutouts, after recording seven during the 2021 season.
Lema led the Bears in scoring this year. The freshman from Morgan Hill scored six goals and tallied 12 points during her debut campaign. She tallied four game-winning goals as she notched the winner at Long Beach State and scored the only goal of the game vs. USF, Utah and Arizona. She also led Cal in shots with 44 as she paced the Bears attack. Lema played in all 18 contests for the Bears and made 15 starts, she was also one of six Bears to top 1,000 minutes this year as she played 1,164.
Oke finished her freshman season with three points as she played primarily in defense for the Bears. The Lawrenceville, Georgia native played in 13 games and made 11 starts. She recorded an assist in the Bears' season opener vs. UC San Diego. Oke also scored the game-winning goal in Cal's 1-0 win over Arizona State. After missing time during non-conference play due to injury, she played the final 10 games of Pac-12 play and grew in influence, playing 75 minutes or more in the final five contests.
