Stanford Escapes With 3-2 Win Over The Bears

Candace Yingling Posted Two Hits

STANFORD - Sona Halajian battled in the circle, recording a season-best seven strikeouts, but California fell to Stanford, 3-2, Friday night in the second game of a doubleheader at the Stanford Invitational at Smith Family Stadium.

The Golden Bears fell to 2-2 on the year. Tonight's game was a non-conference matchup.

After falling behind, 2-0, in the second inning, Cal clawed its way back into the contest, tying it at two in the top of the sixth.

Cal got on the board in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half. Candace Yingling singled and Kennedy Thomas reached on an error to set the table. Tatum Anzaldo then posted her first career hit, and the ensuing error on the throw to first allowed Yingling to score to make it 2-1, Stanford.

In the top of the sixth, Lauren Espalin and Yingling notched back-to-back singles to once again set the table. Solid in the circle and at the plate, Halajian laced a single to right to tie the game at two.

A Stanford home run in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the gamewinner for the Cardinal.

Halajian took the loss but went the distance, allowing five hits, two earned runs and two walks to go with her seven strikeouts.

Cal plays California Baptist and Stanford in another doubleheader tomorrow. The Bears face the Lacers first at 11:30 am and the Cardinal under the lights at 5:30 p.m.
