BERKELEY – California Baptist starting pitcher Chris Burica tossed a complete-game shutout as the Golden Bears suffered a 7-0 series-opening defeat Friday night at Evans Diamond.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak by California (10-7), and marked the first time this season that the Bears failed to score. A quiet night at the plate was compounded by four Cal errors across the third and fourth frames, which enabled the Lancers (11-4) to jump ahead 2-0 before extending their lead with a four-run eighth inning.
Aaron Roberts, making his first career start on the mound, got Cal off on the right foot with two scoreless innings in an "opener" assignment. He struck out four Lancers and allowed just one hit. Cal put runners on the corners in the bottom of the first after singles by
Darren Baker and
Steven Zobac, but could not capitalize. The Bears left six runners on base in the contest.
Sam Stoutenborough (0-2) delivered a strong performance in relief of Roberts, despite taking the loss. The junior struck out five batters across five frames, but was tagged with one unearned run in both the third and fourth innings after the Bears' defensive miscues extended the CBU halves.
CBU's four runs in the eighth came on a pair of home runs by Ulises Caballero and Harrison Spohn.
Burica scattered eight Cal hits, struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
