BERKELEY – California got a match high nine kills from
Lydia Grote in a 19-25, 15-25, 17-25 defeat to Arizona on Friday night at Haas Pavilion. Â
Katarina Pantovic had five kills and seven digs for the Bears and
Bella Bergmark tallied four kills and four blocks.
Kendall Jensen added 19 assists for Cal (1-16).Â
Arizona (8-9) was led by seven kills from Paige Whipple.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded points early on in the opening frame with Cal taking an 11-10 lead on a Grote kill. The Wildcats went on to score 10 of the next 12 points to take a seven-point advantage and the Bears couldn't recover as UA took the set, 25-19.
Arizona used another run to start the second, scoring 10 straight points for a 12-3 lead. Bergmark ended the run with a kill and Cal pulled within 14-7 on a
Makana Meyer service ace and Arizona attack error. The Bears couldn't get closer from there with the Cats taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Digging another hole at 10-2 in the third, the Bears went on two scoring runs of four straight to make it 18-14 on a Grote kill, but couldn't get closer than four as Arizona closed out the match. Â
