CORVALLIS, Oregon -
Sona Halajian's two-run homer and
Haylei Archer compiling a complete-game shutout led California to 2-0 win over Oregon State in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader from the OSU Sports Complex. The Golden Bears picked up their first conference win of 2021 and improved to 12-5 overall.Â
Archer (5-0) went the distance, allowing just three hits and two walks, and she struck out a season-best seven batters. The Beavers best scoring opportunity was when they had two on in the bottom of the fifth, but Cal's true freshman pitcher ended the rally with a ground out. Saturday's win marked Archer's second complete-game victory after garnering the first at Stanford on Feb. 27.Â
The Bears wasted no time getting on the board. After
Makena Smith reached on an error, Halajian smacked a two-run homer to put Cal up, 2-0, in the first inning. It was Halajian's second home run of the season.Â
Cameron Kondo singled for Cal's other hit. Kondo and Smith also each stole a base.Â
The second game of today's doubleheader will count as a non-conference game. The series concludes tomorrow at 11 a.m.
