CORVALLIS, Ore. – California suffered a 5-3 series-ending loss to Oregon State Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium, closing the book on a challenging eight-game road swing for the Golden Bears.
Â
Cal (18-16, 5-7 Pac-12) came out swinging and jumped ahead 3-1 after three innings, but went quiet at the plate over the final six frames as OSU scored four unanswered runs to complete the weekend sweep. Despite four extra-base hits in the first three innings, including
Dylan Beavers' 10th home run of the season, Cal managed just three singles from the fourth inning on.
Â
Paulshawn Pasqualotto kept the OSU bats in check the majority of the afternoon, pitching into the fifth inning. The freshman right-hander struck out a career-high six batters, but allowed OSU to extend innings with four walks issued and three two-out hits. With a 3-2 lead in the fifth, Pasqualotto surrendered a pair of two-out singles that put runners on the corners. Cal made the call to the bullpen and brought in
Jack Wolger, who gave up a game-tying single to Wade Meckler the next at bat.
Â
OSU (24-10, 10-5) took a 4-3 lead the next frame when Jacob Melton doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Garret Forrester.
Josh White (3-1) took the loss on the mound, as the Bears were unable to stage a comeback in the later stages of the contest.
Â
The Bears' early advantage was powered by a
Quentin Selma triple off the center-field wall and an RBI single from
John Lagattuta in the opening inning. Beavers' solo home run in the third was the last run scored by Cal.
