Former Cal Standout Slugged 38th Home Run Of 2021 Season Tuesday
BERKELEY – Former California infielder Marcus Semien hit his 38th home run of the 2021 Major League Baseball season Tuesday night, setting a program record for single-season home runs at the MLB level by a Golden Bear.
Â
Semien, who is in his first season with the Toronto Blue Jays and his ninth major-league season overall, slugged No. 38 in a 5-1 win against the New York Yankees. The long ball broke his tie with fellow Cal baseball alumnus Jeff Kent, who hit 37 for the San Francisco Giants in 2002.
Â
It was Semien's sixth home run in as many games. The 2021 All-Star played at Cal from 2009-11 and was a sixth-round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2011. He's slashing .270/.338/.548 with 38 home runs and 88 RBI in 137 games played for the Blue Jays this year.
