Lema Scores Late To Lift Bears

Karlie Lema Scores In the 86th Minute As Cal Defeats Arizona 1-0

TUCSON, ARIZONA – Karlie Lema scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute as the Cal women's soccer team finished a three-game road trip with a 1-0 victory over Arizona on a scorching hot afternoon at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium.

The Bears controlled much of the action and opportunities throughout the game as they held Arizona to only one shot on goal and zero corner kicks, however the game was scoreless late into the second half.

Keely Roy worked her way down the right side after collecting the ball in her own half. Roy made a nice move to get around two defenders and then chased the ball down the right, winning a duel with an Arizona defender. Roy continued to dribble, drawing defenders as she moved centrally and laying the ball off to Lema on the right. Lema fired the ball on her first touch, knocking the ball in at the near post from a sharp angle to score the game-winning goal.

The goal was Lema's third of the season and followed a similar script to last year's game vs. Arizona as Lema scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Bears won, 1-0, in Berkeley during the 2021 season.

The goal was a culmination of a hard-fought game in the heat of the Arizona desert after the game kicked off at noon.

The Bears also recorded their sixth shutout of the season as they held Arizona scoreless. Angelina Anderson made one save en route to earning her 24th career shutout, tied for second-most in school history with Cal Hall of Famer Maite Zabala.

Cal created the first good opportunity in the 11th minute, Ayo Oke dribbled down the right flank, got to the endline and cut the ball back to the penalty spot, where an onrushing Roy connected with the ball, but her shot sailed just over the bar.

Mia Fontana fired a shot in the 22nd minute after a nice Bears buildup. After some sustained possession, Oke played it back to Gifford who whipped a ball to the back post, where Fontana latched onto it and fired a one-time shot that forced a save from Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey.

In the 36th minute, the Bears created back-to-back opportunities. Anysa Gray created the first one after spinning off her defender and making a 50-yard run with the ball at her feet. Gray's cross couldn't connect with the onrushing Ari Manrique. Moments later, Roy collected the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot that went just wide of Hisey's left post.

Jadyn Shinn had the first good chance of the second half as she received the ball 22 yards away, took it to her right foot and fired, forcing a save from Hisey.

In the 81st minute, Oke went down the right, stepped over the ball and fired a left-footed shot that tailed away from the far post. Lema found the net five minutes later to secure a Cal win.

The Bears will return home on Thursday after nearly two weeks since their last home match. Cal will open its Pac-12 conference home slate with a game against Washington State at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Insider live from Edwards Stadium.
