Adimabua Scores In Draw With Oregon State

BERKELEY - Nonso Adimabua scored the equalizer for Cal men's soccer in a 1-1 tie with Oregon State on Sunday at Edwards Stadium, where the Golden Bears wound up playing 11 vs. 9 after the Beavers collected two red cards.

"It was a game both teams wanted to go out and win, and the intensity built up all the way to the very last second," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "Both teams were competing extremely hard, and I was really proud of our guys for battling and for us to keep 11 players on the field. It gave us a really good chance to win. At the end of the day, we have to finish the chances we get so that we can get into the winning column in a game like that."

After the Bears' second 1-1 tie with the Beavers – including an Oct. 6 result in Corvallis, Oregon – Cal's record stands at 3-7-6 (1-5-3 in the Pac-12). OSU is 6-3-5 (2-1-4 Pac-12).

The scoring began in the 24th minute, as, after an infraction in the Cal box, the Beavers were awarded a penalty kick. Mouhameth Thiam converted the PK, and OSU led, 1-0.

The game turned in the 31st minute. Wyatt Meyer took a free kick deep in Cal's defensive third and found Adimabua alone in the attacking third. With his defenders beaten, OSU goalkeeper Luis Castillo fouled the Cal striker well outside the box and was shown a red card. Goalie Jesus Sanchez substituted in for Thiam, and Cal played most of the rest of the game 11 vs. 10.

OSU took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

During the break, Cal Athletics recognized the contributions of former Cal women's soccer player and assistant coach Jennifer Thomas to the Bears and to the game of soccer, as part of Cal's celebration of Title IX during the 50-year anniversary of the federal civil rights law. Thomas, who is also the mother of the Cal men's team's Wyatt Meyer, was on hand at Edwards Stadium to pick up a bouquet of flowers from Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director & SWA Jennifer Simon-O'Neill and Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton

Cal was the aggressor in the second half, when the Bears outshot Oregon State, 13-2. Cal also outshot OSU for the game, 19-6.

In the 59th minute, Adimabua fired the ball past Sanchez from 20 yards out. With his second goal of the season, the Cal junior tied the game, 1-1.

"That was good technique and a good strike by Nonso," Griffin said. "We've been waiting to get that out of him all season long. He's progressively gotten better. Today getting that goal hopefully gets a little bit of weight off his shoulders. I'm super excited that he was able to get on the scoresheet."

In the 89th minute, Nate Carrasco's long pass found Adimabua streaking towards the OSU goal. Adimabua eluded two defenders and crossed to Rohan McEligot inside the box. The freshman midfielder eventually passed the ball to Shoei Honda deeper in the box, and the sophomore forward blasted a shot off an OSU defender before Sanchez snared the rebound.

After the goalie's ensuing punt, the ball wound up at the feet of Juan Martinez in Cal's half. As the midfielder went to clear the ball, OSU's Adria Capdevila fouled him to earn a red card at the 89:48 mark. Cal played the rest of the way 11 vs. 9.

Cal closes out the season on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m., when the Bears host No. 5 Stanford in the Big Clasico.
