Bears Close Season With Narrow Loss To UCLA

Late Touchdown Lifts Bruins Past Cal, 35-28

BERKELEY - The Cal football team led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter but No. 17 UCLA came back to defeat the Bears 35-28 in the 2022 season-finale on Friday at California Memorial Stadium.

The Bears opened up a 21-10 lead with less than a minute left remaining in the first half before the Bruins came back to establish a 27-21 advantage early in the fourth quarter. Cal (4-8, 2-7 Pac-12) took the lead once again on the last of quarterback Jack Plummer's four touchdown passes - an 8-yard strike to Jaydn Ott with 11:16 to play. But UCLA had a final answer, scoring a touchdown and a 2-point conversion with just under eight minutes remaining.

Plummer finished 24-for-34 for 294 yards and four touchdowns. In the process he became just the sixth Cal quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a season, finishing sixth on the Bears' all-time single-season list with 3,095 yards.

Two of Plummer's TD throws went to wide receiver Jeremiah Hunter, who in addition to compiling his first career multiple-touchdown performance also set career highs with eight catches for 153 yards. He's the first Cal player to record at least 150 receiving yards in a game since Nikko Remigio registered 157 in the Bears' 41-11 win over Stanford in the 2019 Big Game.

Linebacker Oluwafemi Oladejo had a career-high 17 tackles, the most by a Cal defender since Evan Weaver recorded 22 at Utah in 2019. Safety Daniel Scott had a career-high 16 tackles in his final college game.

"It's been a challenging year with ups and downs," Scott said. "At the same time, you've got to look at the positives. We played a lot of close games. It's just the small details that cost us some games."

The Bears open the 2023 season Sept. 2 at North Texas before opening the home schedule against Auburn on Sept. 9.
