Heartbreaker At Haas

Cal Falls In Five Sets To Visiting Utah

BERKELEY – California volleyball (7-17, 0-14 Pac-12) came into Haas Pavilion on Sunday ready to make a statement against Utah (14-11, 7-7), thrilling Bears fans with an offensive explosion right out of the gate – however, the visitors responded with their own offensive surge that was ultimately enough to send the Utes home with a 3-2 victory over Cal.

Just two days after recording a career-high 14 kills against Colorado, freshman Peyton DeJardin posted one better with 15 on Sunday afternoon. Classmate Mikayla Hayden also impressed by leading all players with 5.0 total blocks.

As a team, Cal hit an impressive .484 in the first set, which it won with a score of 25-17. The Utes kept things close in the first half of that set, but the Bears widened the gap for good on a late 6-0 run that included four kills from junior Lydia Grote. They continued their offensive momentum into the second set, hitting .391 on the way to a 25-16 victory that was clinched by two straight blocks from Hayden. It was here that Utah, determined to turn things around, shifted into another gear; the Utes subsequently won the next three sets, 25-15, 25-14, 15-5.
