TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Cole Elvis delivered a go-ahead single to right field in the 10th inning as California capped a difficult weekend on a high note with a 5-3 win against No. 10 Florida State on Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium.
Â
Tied 3-3 in the 10th,
Nathan Martorella led off the extra frame with a double down the left-field line and scored four pitches later when Elvis drove a single to the outfield for the game-winning run.
Rodney Green Jr., who reached on an infield single, later scored on a wild pitch for an insurance run.
Â
Both teams' bats came alive late after six scoreless innings. Cal (6-5) jumped ahead 3-0 with one run in the seventh and a pair in the eighth before the Seminoles climbed back with three runs of their own in the eighth. It was a matter of patience for Cal's bats throughout the afternoon; the Bears tallied just one hit through the first six innings and struck out 15 times, but were able to attack the Florida State (7-4) bullpen.
Â
Despite not earning the decision, Cal starter
Joseph King went toe-to-toe with FSU left-hander Ross Dunn over the first half of the contest. King struck out seven and retired 14 batters in a row throughout five innings of work, allowing just two singles. Dunn was equally dominant for FSU, notching 11 strikeouts in six scoreless frames.
Â
The Bears scratched the first run across in the seventh when Elvis led off with a double down the right-field line and later scored when
Hance Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. An inning later,
Caleb Lomavita scored from second base on a throwing error after leading off the inning with a walk before
Keshawn Ogans drove in Martorella with a backside single through the right side of the infield to make it 3-0.
Â
Cal's two eighth-inning runs proved critical as FSU knotted the game when Brett Roberts singled home two runs and scored on a wild pitch. With the go-ahead run on second base, Cal turned to
Nick Proctor out of the bullpen. The senior right-hander ended the eighth-inning threat with a swinging strikeout and retired all seven batters he faced through 2.1 innings pitched to pick up his first win of the year.
Â
King (7),
Connor Sullivan (3) and Proctor (4) combined for 15 strikeouts on the mound Sunday. Both Elvis and Green. Jr. had two-hit performances while Martorella reached base three times and scored twice (1-for-3, two walks).
Â
Cal moved to 3-2 against nationally-ranked opponents this season despite dropping the weekend series. The Bears blew a late lead in a 4-3 series-opening loss on Friday before coming up short in a 7-4 defeat Saturday.
