BERKELEY – California secured its first home sweep since April of 2019 with an 8-0 shutout win against New Mexico on Sunday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium. It was the second shutout of the series by the Golden Bears, who outscored New Mexico 42-5 across three games.
Cal (25-25) used five different pitchers, who totaled nine strikeouts while limiting the Lobos to just four hits. Four of the five pitchers worked two innings apiece, including
Nick Proctor (4-1), who struck out three on the way to his fourth win of the season.
Keshawn Ogans (2-for-3) and
Dom Souto (3-for-3) put Cal on the scoreboard with solo home runs – Cal's ninth and 10th long balls of the weekend – in the second and third innings, respectively.
Caleb Lomavita added an RBI single in the third and the Bears extended their lead to five runs by the end of the fourth on an RBI groundout by
Nathan Martorella and
Dylan Beavers' second of two doubles.
Back-to-back doubles by
Cole Elvis and Souto were followed with a sacrifice fly by Beavers in the sixth. Souto knocked in his third run of the game with another sacrifice fly in the seventh, making it an 8-0 contest.
Freshmen
Tucker Bougie and
Christian Becerra both kept New Mexico without a hit during their two-inning appearance while fellow freshman
Ian May needed just 21 pitches to get through the first two frames of the afternoon in his start as an opener.
Josh White fanned a pair in the ninth in his second relief appearance of the series.
Cal tied a season high with six doubles, including a pair from both Beavers and Souto. Martorella (1-for-5) extended his hitting streak to 15 games with his single in the sixth inning.
The sweep was the Bears' first at home since April 5-7, 2019 against Washington State and the first overall since taking all three games at Washington on April 30-May 2, 2021 last season.
