LOWELL, OR – The Cal women's rowing team battled all morning and finished third at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships at Dexter Lake on Sunday morning.

Stanford ended Washington's four-year reign as conference champions by finishing with 43.5 points. The Huskies finished in second with 41.0 points, Cal took third with 31.5 points, followed by Oregon State (23.5), USC (22), Washington State (10.5), UCLA (10).

"The team did a great job today," said head coach Al Acosta. "The first and second eight had their best races of the season at the right time. We've never traveled during final exams, so its super impressive that the team locked in and got done what needed to get done. WE know we can find more speed over the next two weeks as we get ready for the national championships. In Sarasota."

The Bears opened the morning finishing third in the novice eight race. Cal jumped out to an early lead after a clean start, but after the first 500 meters Washington and Stanford eclipsed the Bears. The Cardinal took the first race of the day with a time of 6:34.31. Washington finished just behind with a time of 6:34.35. Cal clocked in with a time of 6:45.14, followed by Washington State at 7:31.59.

In the third varsity eight race, Cal found themselves in fourth in a battle with USC halfway down the course. In the final 500 meters, the bears overcame the Trojans and even added distance between the two boats. Stanford won the race with a time of 6:29.33 followed by Washington with a time of 6:32.52. Cal took third with a time of 6:40.75, and USC finished four seconds behind the Bears for fourth with a time of 6:44.72.

In the varsity four race, Cal opened up in fourth and stayed there. The top three spots went to Stanford (7:01.86), Washington (7:06.45), and USC (7:10.68). Cal clocked in with a time of 7:14.38.

Both the second varsity and varsity eight races followed a similar script for the Bears. In both races, Cal battled to stay in range of the top two boats but could not overcome early deficits to capture second. In the 2V8 race, Cal had plenty of distance between themselves and fourth place and was a seat behind second. Cal continued to stay neck-and-neck with the Cardinal in a tight battle for second, however, a final 500-meter burst by Stanford saw the Bears finish in third with a time of 6:25.24. Washington took first with a time of 6:22.03, followed by 6:23.70.

In the final race of the day, Cal, Stanford, Washington, and Oregon State all separated themselves early. Stanford had the early lead after 500-meters, owning a three-seat advantage over the Huskies. Cal was just ahead of Oregon State in third. Over the final 1,000 meters Stanford added to their lead and finished first with a time of 6:13.06. Washington took second with a time of 6:19.06 followed by the Bears in third with a time of 6:20.54, and Oregon State finished five seconds behind the Bears for fourth.

With the third-place finish, Cal will await its fate for the NCAA Championships when the field is announced on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. PT.  The NCAA Championships will take place May 27-29 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, FL.
