Oke, Wy Named To U.S. U-20 World Cup Team
Two Bears To Compete For United States At U20 World Cup
CHICAGO – The United States Under-20 National Team named California sophomore
Ayo Oke and freshman
Teagan Wy to the roster for the upcoming U20 World Cup.
Â
The Bears are well-represented as there are 18 players in college on the team and the Bears are one of five schools that sent multiple players.
Â
"We are all very proud of Ayo and Teagan and look forward to watching them represent the U.S. U-20 National Team at the World Cup," Cal head coach
Neil McGuire said. "They'll be playing on soccer's biggest stage."
Â
The USA was drawn into group D at the World Cup, which will take place Aug. 10-28 in Costa Rica. The USA opens the tournament on Thursday, Aug. 11 against Ghana, faces the Netherlands on Sunday, Aug. 14 and finishes the group stage vs. Japan on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The U.S. will play its first and third group games at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica and its second group game at the Estadio Nacional in San José.
Â
The U.S. named 21 players to the World Cup squad, including 16 from the team that won the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in March. Oke was part of the US squad that won its seventh consecutive title. Oke played the full 90 minutes in the semifinal match vs. Puerto Rico as the USA won 7-0, in the match that clinched a spot in the U20 World Cup for the USA.
Â
Oke played in six matches in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship including three knockout round games, helping the U.S. score 49 goals without conceding. As a defender, she helped the Americans keep a clean sheet in all seven matches.Â
Â
"I can't wait to represent the country and showcase Cal on an international stage," Oke said. "It's an honor to be able to play against other countries and represent the U.S. I always feel blessed when I get an invite."
Â
Oke also played for the United States at the Sud Laides Cup in June. She started all three games of the tournament as the Americans won by defeating France and Mexico before tying the Netherlands and clinching the title.
Â
Cal incoming freshman
Teagan Wy was also named to the team. She has represented the United States at multiple age levels, including twice during this cycle as she was called up in October and May for different camps. She started and kept a clean sheet in a friendly against Costa Rica during the May camp. Â
Â
"It's a great opportunity and it's always an honor to be called up," Wy said. "I am super excited to show what I got and support the girls and the U.S. as well. Once you put on the crest, you feel so proud of yourself and how you can be representing the country and your family. It's amazing."
The U20 team is made up of players who were born after 2002, Wy is one of the only five players on the team who was born later than 2003.
This is the 12th time that Wy has been named to a U.S. Youth National Team, as she had previously been called up starting at the U14 level. Wy started for the United States at the 2018 U15 CONCACAF Championship, leading the United States to a title as they defeated Mexico, El Salvador and Portugal.
