Gavin Schurr And Aysha Shaheed Post Historic 200m Times

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Just as anticipated, California track & field came swinging right out of the gate in its first indoor meet of 2023, accumulating 6 total podium finishes and 10 new personal records on day one of the New Mexico Team Open.

Perhaps not as anticipated – much less at the very start of the season – were the two school records set by a pair of the Bears' younger stars. Sophomores Gavin Schurr and Aysha Shaheed each stamped their names at the top of Cal's men's and women's indoor 200m lists, respectively, with the former posting a time of 21.21 and the latter crossing the finish line in 23.81.

Schurr, who transferred from USC this past offseason but never competed indoors for the Trojans, surpassed alumnus Toby Atawo's 2003 time of 21.27 to take top billing in the record book. For her part, Shaheed – who finished second overall in Friday's race – joins former Golden Bear Antonette Carter in the No. 1 spot, moving up from No. 4 and matching her 17-year-old time.

Cal found success all across the board on Friday, starting with the very first event (women's weight throw). Senior Camryn Rogers, who finished third at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships and currently owns the program record in the event, reached a distance of 23.74m (77-10.75) to win the competition by an astonishing 4.11m (13-5.75). Juniors Ivar Moisander and Michael Gupta smashed their own personal records in the men's iteration of the event, with Moisander's 19.07m (62-6.75) moving him up to fifth in school history and Gupta's 18.67m (61-3) landing him at No. 10 on the all-time program list.

In the women's high jump, sophomore Toby Lai made her indoor debut by clearing the bar at 1.81m (5-11.25) – already good enough for third on Cal's indoor program list as well as third place in the field. Senior Jai Williams and sophomore Riley Knott kept pace with each other throughout the day, eventually splitting the high jump title with a shared personal best of 2.06m (6-9). Meanwhile, senior Hakim McMorris took second in the long jump with his own PR of 7.51m (24-7.75) – eighth-farthest in school history; on the track, sophomore David Foster, who competed for Team USA at the U20 World Championships last summer, set his own PR of 21.55 in the 200m dash to tie for eighth in program history.

Cal will begin the second day of competition with the women's pole vault at 9:30 a.m. PT tomorrow morning. In all, 35 athletes are slated to appear across 10 total events.
