Bears Dominate In New Mexico
Jeff Duensing, Makhaila Mills Record Event Wins

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – California track & field closed out its first meet of the season with an impressive Saturday at the New Mexico Team Open, following a stellar outing on Friday in which the Bears set two program records. The team compiled 6 podium finishes on Saturday to bring their total to 12 on the weekend, as well as 11 new top 10 marks (18 total).
Junior
Jeff Duensing was a standout on the men's side, taking first place in the shot put with his personal-best mark of 19.39m (63-7.5) that improved his No. 3 spot in program history. Senior
Henry Larkin also impressed with a second-place 400m time of 47.38 that moved him up to No. 3 on the school indoor 400m list; meanwhile, in the pole vault, both senior
Skyler Magula and
Tyler Burns rose to fourth in program history with their shared pole vault mark of 5.27m (17-3.5).
For the women, it was sophomore
Makhaila Mills who led the pack in her Golden Bear debut, posting a 60m time of 7.39 in the preliminary round to earn the No. 3 spot on the school's all-time list and following up with a first-place effort of 7.42 in the final . She was pursued closely in that race by classmate
Aysha Shaheed, who rose to Cal's No. 7 all-time spot with a third-place 7.47 after winning her preliminary heat.
The Bears also posted three program top 10 marks in the women's pole vault, with senior
Amari Turner reaching a height of 4.12 (13-6.25) to improve her No. 4 mark (and tie for second place in the field) while senior
Kylie Hilton and freshman
Ali Sahaida tied at 3.82m (12-6.5) for the No. 9 spot. Junior
Jada Hicks improved her own No. 4 mark in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.34 and winning her preliminary heat; sophomore
Asjah Atkinson finished just behind at 8.45 (sixth-fastest in Cal history). To close the day out, senior
Asha Fletcher posted a second-place leap of 12.55m (41-2) in the women's triple jump.
