Cal Scores Early, Ties WSU 1-1

Lema Scores Team-Leading 4th Goal In 6th Minute

BERKELEY – The California women's soccer team led for most of Friday afternoon's match against Washington State, but a late Cougar equalizer ended things in a 1-1 draw at Edwards Stadium.

The Golden Bears remain undefeated in Pac-12 contests, moving to 5-3-6 overall and 2-0-4 in the conference.

Junior Karlie Lema put Cal ahead less than six minutes in. With a defender on her hip, freshman Soleil Dimry cut through the WSU (8-5-1, 1-4-1) defense with an incisive through ball to find Lema making a perfectly-timed diagonal run behind the back line.

Lema took one deft touch past the rushing Cougar goalkeeper and squared herself off to the goal, scoring with her favored right foot just before a recovering WSU defender could close her down. It was the forward's team-leading fourth goal of the season and her first during Pac-12 play.

The Bears put three more shots on frame before the end of the first half, while Cal goalkeeper Teagan Wy was forced to make a pair of saves. Washington State came out aggressive after the break, attempting seven shots in the first 24 minutes of the second half resulting in two more saves by Wy.

With less than two minutes to go, an unlucky deflection on a WSU shot attempt saw the ball fall right to Rajanah Reed at the edge of the six-yard box and she tied the game with a first-time flick into the upper back netting. Neither team had a shot on target the rest of the way.

Wy finished with four saves for the fifth time in six games. It was the 12th consecutive outing in which Cal's defense conceded fewer than two goals.
