STANFORD – The California women's tennis team captured 17 of 18 matches, including a sweep in doubles, on the first day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
 
The Golden Bears won 13 of 14 singles matches, with six Bears advancing to Saturday's third round. Leading the way was Cal junior Jessica Alsola, the tournament's top seed who won twice. The 47th-ranked Alsola defeated Eastern Washington's Scout Mathews, 6-0, 6-2, in the opening round of 128 and beat Pacific's Tomi Main, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 64. She'll next play in the round of 32 on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. PT against Cal Poly's Delanie Dunkle.
 
The Bears joining Alsola in the round of 32 are the fourth-seeded and 98th-ranked Katja Wiersholm, the sixth-seeded Hannah Viller Moeller, the eighth-seeded Mao Mushika, Lan Mi and Berta Passola Folch.
 
In doubles, the top-seeded and ninth-ranked pair of Alsola and Wiersholm defeated Portland State's Makoto Ohara and Capu Sanoner, 8-3, and was one of four Cal doubles teams to win in the opening round of 64. The four duos included the seventh-seeded Viller Moeller and Mushika – the top-flight champions of this year's Cal Fall Invitational – who beat Sacramento State's Mayya Gorbunova and Elena Mercioiu, 8-4, on The Farm.
 
The Cal tandem of Cami Brown and Lan Mi and team of Makenna Thiel and Berta Passola Folch also advanced to Saturday's round of 32.
 
ITA regionals continue on Saturday and conclude on Tuesday.
