Cal Wins 2-0 At Pacific

STOCKTON – Adrian Guzman scored the gamewinner with his first goal of the year and freshman Wisdom Onuoma scored the first goal of his college career as the California men's soccer team shut out Pacific, 2-0, on Saturday night at Knoles Field.

Cal improved to 5-4-3 with the nonconference win, while the Tigers fell to 4-4-4.

In the 39th minute, Guzman played a give and go with Giancarlo Mota and then fired the ball past Pacific goalkeeper Joshua Moya to give Cal a 1-0 lead.

"Credit to Giancarolo Mota for getting up the line then and the whole game," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "Adrian did a good job starting that play, Giancarlo drove it into the box and did a good job setting up Adrian."

The Tigers were awarded a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, but Cory Johnson shot high over Cal goalkeeper Marco Brougher's goal, and the Golden Bears took the lead into the break.

After the second of eight Cal corner kicks in the second half, a bad clearance by the Tigers left the ball at Nonso Adimabua's feet. The Cal forward played a short pass to Onuoma in front of goal, and the defender slotted the ball inside the far post to make the score 2-0.

"Wisdom took advantage of the situation – you never know when the ball will fall to your feet – and luckily for us he put it away," Griffin said.

Brougher made three saves and combined with Connor Lambe, a late substitute who made one save, to blank Pacific.

"You always want to have positive bounce back, and we're all very happy with the result," said Griffin, whose team snapped a two-game skid. "Hopefully it gives us confidence and momentum going into the final stretch of Pac-12 games, with everything to play for."

With their last regular-season, nonconference game behind them, the Bears return to conference play with games at Washington on Thursday, Oct. 19, and at Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 22.
