Scouting the Competition
The Utes come into the week with 5-3-4 overall record and a 1-1-1 conference mark after defeating Oregon 4-2 and drawing with Oregon State 2-2 this past weekend. Utah has only been shutout twice in 12 matches this season but have struggled at home with a 1-3 record at Ute Soccer Field. The 25th-ranked Buffs have had a sensational season so far, boasting a 10-2 overall record and 2-1 start in conference. They also boast an impressive 25-9 goal differential and a 2.08 goals per game average.
That's Wy
Sophomore goalkeeper
Teagan Wy has played just about every available minute between the posts for the Bears this season and her stats show why. Wy ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with a 3.91 saves per game average and ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with a .782 save percentage and 43 total saves. Over the last four matches she has allowed just two goals and allowed just three in all of September.
Over the Hump
Cal's 1-0 win at Washington not only gave the Golden Bears a perfect start to the Pac-12 season, but also lifted them over the .500 mark for the first time this season. After starting the season 0-2-0 against two of the top talents in the nation in No. 1 North Carolina and Tennessee, the Bears have suffered just one defeat, boast a 5-1-3 record, and are unbeaten in Pac-12 play at 2-0-1.
Spreading the Love
The Bears have scored 16 goals off of nine different boots this season. Juniors
Karlie Lema and
Ari Manrique lead the team with three each. Junior
Velize King and seniors
Rilee Harmon and
Mia Fontana have found the back of the net twice, and four other Bears have each chipped in a single goal.
Defending Edwards
Playing at home has been good to the Bears, who hold a 3-1-3 record at Edwards Stadium so far. Over the seven matches, Cal has earned three shutouts and allowed just four goals, two of which came via penalty kicks. The Bears currently boast an 11-4 goal differential while playing on their home field.
Lema Named Pac-12 Offensive Player of The Week
Junior forward
Karlie Lema was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4. The first weekly honor in Lema's career came on the back of Cal's first two victories of the season. Lema netted a pair of goals and had an assist in the two contests for a total of five points. In Cal's 5-1 win over San Francisco in its home opener, Lema assisted on the first goal of the match. It was her first assist of the season and third of her career. She went on to score a brace against Cal Poly on the only two shots she took in the 2-0 victory. She is the first Bear to earn a weekly award this season.
