SAN DIEGO – Hannah Viller Moeller won the first set of her singles quarterfinal at the ITA National Fall Championships on Friday, but the California women's tennis senior ultimately faltered against Oklahoma State's third-seeded Ange Oby Kajuru to end her run at the Barnes Tennis Center. Golden Bear junior Jessica Alsola, meanwhile, won in the consolation draw to advance to the semifinals.
 
Viller Moeller, suffering just her second singles loss of the season, lost to the 40th-ranked Cowgirl, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The Cal veteran has a 13-2 record.
 
Alsola, who has a 10-3 record, defeated Alabama's Petra Sedlackova on Friday, 7-6(2), 6-4.
 
In Saturday's consolation semifinals, Alsola plays Pennsylvania's Esha Valaga at 10 a.m. PT.
 
TEMPE, Ariz. – Five Golden Bears began play in the Thunderbird Invitational on Friday, with Cal going 3-4 at Arizona State's Whiteman Tennis Center.
 
The Bears got singles victories from senior Cami Brown, who posted a 7-5, 6-0 win over ASU's Natasha Hill; junior Lan Mi, who beat USC's Sloane Morra, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0; and freshman Tiziana-Marie Schomburg, who defeated UCLA's Elise Wagle, 6-4, 7-6(5).
 
The annual Sun Devil event concludes Sunday.
