LONG BEACH, Calif. – The California softball team earned a pair of wins behind dominant pitching on Saturday at the Wilson Invitational at the Long Beach State University Softball Complex.   Â
Anna Reimers and
Haylei Archer both threw complete games, allowing just one earned run between them as the Bears (8-2) defeated UC Davis, 3-1, and Long Beach State, 6-1.
Game 1 – Cal 3, UC Davis 1  Â
Reimers got the start in the circle and set down the first five Aggies in order before back-to-back hits made it 1-0, UC Davis. Cal got even right away in the home half, using three straight hits capped by a
Mika Lee double to plate
Hope Alley and it was 1-1 through two.
The sophomore from Highlands Ranch, Colo., had her stuff working through four, allowing just two hits, and her teammates picked her up in the home half. Lee laid down a bunt for a base hit to put runners on first and second with two down and
Makena Smith made it work with a 2-run double to right, putting the Bears in front 3-1.
Smith's double became the game-winner for California as Reimers allowed just one more hit on the way to a complete game victory with just the one earned run.
Kennedy Thomas,
Kacey Zobac,
Tianna Bell and Lee each recorded two hits apiece for the Bears, who out-hit the Aggies 11-3. Â
Game 2 – Cal 6, Long Beach State 1
It was a pitchers' duel heading to the fourth with Cal starter
Haylei Archer able to work around three early defensive miscues and keep LBSU off the board. The Bears finally broke through with Zobac doubling to the wall in right center, the first hit for either team, but she was stranded after a popup.
Beach was able to get on the scoreboard first with an RBI single to make it 1-0 heading to the sixth. The lead was short-lived for the home team as Cal took advantage of two errors and a hit by pitch, tying the game with Alley racing home on a miscue at first base.
The Bears kept the momentum going in the frame, taking their first lead when Bell was hit with the bases loaded and
Sophie Medellin made it 3-1, Cal, after she drew a walk with the bases full. Cal added one more with another hit by pitch off the arm of
Acacia Anders to take a three-run advantage into the home sixth.
Looking to add to the lead in the seventh with some insurance runs,
D'Asha Saiki did just that with an RBI single to right and Medellin drew another bases loaded walk before Archer closed it out in the seventh. Archer threw Cal's second complete game of the day, allowing just three hits and no earned runs on the way to her fourth win of the season.
