QUICK HITS
  • The Bears opened the season with a convincing series win at Houston, taking the first two games, 7-0 and 5-3, before falling to the Cougars 8-6 in the finale. It was the Bears' first true road series victory to open a season in more than 23 years. Cal got off to a hot start last season as well by sweeping the MLB4 Tournament in Scottsdale, defeating Houston, TCU, and San Diego State.
  • The Bears put up some impressive numbers over the weekend. Through three contests, Cal is hitting .260 as a team, but .310 with runners on base and .324 with runners in scoring position. The Bears have tallied 18 total runs and are averaging six runs per contest.
  • Cal got a tremendous 2023 debut from lefty Ian May on the mound. May threw a career-best eight shutout innings in the season-opening win over Houston. He threw a career-high 103 pitches while scattering three hits and a walk. His seven strikeouts were one shy of his career high. The key to May's success was leadoff hitters going 0-for-8 in the contest.
  • Cal's top-two hitters this weekend, Caleb Lomavita and Rodney Green Jr., were fantastic table setters, batting a combined 13-for-28 (.464) in the series. Lomavita was 6-for-14 with seven runs scored and a home run and was a web gem away from crushing his second home run of the series in game two. Green Jr. was 7-for-14 from the plate while scoring four runs and driving in four. In the opening-day win over Houston, Green. Jr. was 4-for-5 with a double a three-run home run.
  • Sophomore shortstop Carson Crawford also had a stellar weekend. Crawford hit .455 over the weekend (5-for-11) but was stellar with runners in scoring position, going 4-for-6 (.667). His ninth-inning RBI double was the game-winning hit in the series-clinching win over Houston on Saturday night.
  • The Bears have a large sophomore class with 11 players in their second college season/. On Friday, Cal had seven of those sophomores in the starting lineup and an eighth, Christian Becerra, came on in relief of May and closed the 7-0 win out with a quiet ninth.
