Cal Totals Two Event Wins And Eight Program Top Tens

SEATTLE – As the Pac-12's best (and a few others) kicked off competition at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invitational in Seattle's Dempsey Indoor, California track & field certainly took the "Last Chance" moniker seriously. The Golden Bears have just this final meet to improve their indoor marks before NCAA Indoor qualifiers are selected – and on the first day, they delivered.

Not satisfied with simply setting the all-time program record in the 60m hurdles, junior Jada Hicks bettered that two-week-old time to 8.22 on Friday night and became the second Golden Bear (after sophomore Aysha Shaheed) to set a program record twice this season. For her part, Shaheed put her own exclamation point on the meet, running a first-place 23.86 in the 200m dash.

Senior Camryn Rogers only needed a single good throw to put her in first place in the women's weight throw, but it took all six attempts for her to surpass a greater threshold – her own all-time facility mark at the Dempsey. At 22.82m (74-10.50), Rogers won the field by three feet, eight-and-a-half inches.

Cal's pole vaulters once again posted an incredible week, collecting several program top 10 marks. Senior Skyler Magula's standout second-place performance of 5.43m (17-9.75) moved him into sole possession of No. 2 all-time at Cal – just 0.75 inches off the school record. Right behind was sophomore Tyler Burns, who took fourth at 5.33m (17-5.75). On the women's side, senior Amari Turner soared to a personal-best 4.20m (13-9.25) for the highest vault by a Golden Bear since 2018, good for third place in the field and tied for third in program history. Classmate Kylie Hilton and freshman Ali Sahaida also moved up the list, each vaulting 3.95m (12-11.5) to tie for eighth all-time at Cal.

The Bears weren't done recording top 10s, as senior Hakim McMorris raced to a third-place time of 7.91 in the 60m hurdles, seventh-fastest in program history. Meanwhile, junior Busola Akinduro posted a triple jump of 12.84m (42-1.5), improving her own No. 5 entry in the program record book, while freshman Torre Anderson set personal bests in four of five events to accumulate 3386 total points in the pentathlon and improve her own program No. 5 mark.

Cal begins competition with the women's high jump tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. PT.
