Foster’s School Record Highlights Indoor Finale

Bears Grab Seven More Program Top Tens

SEATTLE – As the indoor regular season concluded on Saturday afternoon, California track & field closed out the Ken Shannon Invitational with another fantastic day that included another school record and six additional program top 10 marks, bringing the total to 15 on the weekend.

Two weeks after setting a new program record in the 60m dash, sophomore David Foster repeated that feat in Saturday's event final, running a 6.62 to become the third Golden Bear this season to break a school record twice and placing third overall in the field. Classmate Gavin Schurr, who currently owns the school record in the 200m dash, also cracked Cal's 60m list for the first time this season with a No. 8 time of 6.80.

Juniors Garrett MacQuiddy and Claire Yerby found success the last time they raced in Seattle, both setting new personal records in the mile to land them on Cal's all-time top 10 lists. On Saturday, they did it again, with MacQuiddy finishing in a third-place 3:58.67 and Yerby posting a time of 4:42.52. MacQuiddy's time pushed him up to No. 3 in program indoor mile history – and just .31 seconds off the school record – while Yerby moved up to No. 4 on the women's list.

Cal's two competing heptathletes – senior Cole Whatley and sophomore Riley Knott – finished with strong days and multiple personal bests apiece to move up on the Bears' all-time list. Whatley, who finished third overall with 5348 points, set a new PR in all three events on Saturday to compile a seven-event total of 5348 points, sixth-most in program history. Knott also bettered his own PR to 5097 total points, moving up to Cal's all-time No. 9 spot.

Both of Cal's high jumpers had impressive outings as well, with sophomore Toby Lai clearing the bar at 1.80m (5-10.75) to win the women's event and senior Jai Williams taking second place on the men's side, leaping 2.11m (6-11) to tie for eighth all-time at Cal.

Now, the Bears will wait for the NCAA to announce qualifiers to the Indoor Championships on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Championships themselves will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., from March 10-11.

Cal begins its outdoor season by hosting the Cal Opener at Edwards Stadium on Saturday, March 4.
