SEATTLE – After falling behind by as much as 21 points in the third quarter, Cal (11-11, 2-9) mounted a fourth quarter rally to bring the deficit to 11 points midway through, before ultimately losing to Washington (12-9, 4-7) 70-54 at Alaska Airlines Arena Friday night. The loss ended the Bears' four-game win streak at Washington. Cal was paced by
Evelien Lutje Schipholt's season-high 19 points and seven rebounds.
Â
"I thought we weren't sharp at all," Cal head coach
Charmin Smith said. "They were more physical than us and got us out of our rhythm and what we wanted to do offensively and it's disappointing that we didn't play as well as we could have."
Washington opened the game with an early 8-2 lead and Cal was able to tie the game behind six straight points from Lutje Schipholt and a jumper from
Jayda Curry with about four minutes to go. The Huskies responded with a 9-2 run including three consecutive 3-pointers to end the quarter with a seven-point lead. Washington had five 3-pointers in the quarter.
Â
The Huskies opened the lead further with a 9-0 run to start the second quarter that was finally ended by a Michelle Onyiah putback layup. A 3-pointer by Curry at the 3:46 mark brought the Bears the closest they would get at nine points. Washington responded with an 8-0 run before Kemery Martín hit a free-throw and a 3-pointer to end the half with the Bears down 13. Cal shot just 32.2 percent from the field compared to Washington's 50 percent and 66.7 percent from deep.
Â
The Bears changed up the defense in the second half frequently using a full-court press that caused five straight turnovers for Washington that fueled a 7-0 run for Cal, but they were unable to capitalize, sending the Huskies to the free-throw line 14 times in the quarter while going scoreless from the field for over four minutes. Cal went 2-for-12 to end the quarter with a 21-point deficit.
Â
Cal opened the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run fueled by five Husky turnovers to get back in the game which was finally ended by a layup from Washington's
Dalayah Daniels at the 3:45 mark. Washington went on an 8-2 run from there to secure the win. Lutje Schipholt had 11 of her 19 points in the half.
