BERKELEY – The California softball team turned in some great defensive plays, but couldn't get the bats going in a 4-0 loss to No. 2 UCLA on Friday in the Pac-12 opener at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bears (17-5, 0-1 Pac-12) were limited to just two hits on the afternoon, singles off the bats of
Kennedy Thomas and
Mika Lee. Brooke Yanez picked up her eighth win of the season and Megan Grant collected three hits for the Bruins (24-1, 1-0 Pac-12).
UCLA took an early 1-0 lead on a Grant RBI single, but Cal starter
Haylei Archer was able to limit the damage from there, stranding seven Bruins on the bases heading to the fourth inning. Finally able to add to its lead, UCLA knocked out Archer with a two-run double as Cal went to
Sona Halajian out of the bullpen.
Halajian got out of the frame and retired four straight Bruins before three singles made it 4-0, UCLA. Thomas made a diving catch in foul territory to end the visitor's fourth, her second catch made on the run to help strand Bruin runners on the bases.
