Wildcats Come Back To Sweep Bears

Early Lead Does Not Hold In Cal’s 10-5 Loss

TUCSON, Ariz. – The California baseball team scored the game's opening run and twice in the ninth inning, but could not avoid the series sweep as Arizona came back to win 10-5 on Sunday at Hi Corbett Field.

The Golden Bears (8-6, 0-3 Pac-12) finished the day with five runs on 11 hits, including a solo home run by Kade Kretzschmar and a two-run blast by Max Handron. Rodney Green Jr. smacked an RBI double the opposite way and Peyton Schulze singled through the left side to score the Bears' final run of the game in the ninth, but it was too little too late

Arizona (12-3, 3-0) was held scoreless in the first two innings but finished the day with 10 runs on 12 hits. Nik McClaughry's RBI double in the fifth push Arizona ahead for good while Kiko Romero wrapped up an impressive weekend by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and his third home run of the series in the fourth frame.

Cal starter Tucker Bougie (1-1) had it going early, needing 21 pitches -- 11 in the first and 10 in the second -- to retire the Wildcats in order in the first two innings. He ran into trouble in the third and fourth frames but managed to get out of a jam in both innings with the lead intact for the Bears.

Bougie's day was ended in the fifth when Arizona tallied three-straight RBI doubles with one out. His final line for the afternoon was 4.1 innings pitched, five hits, four runs (all earned) with a walk and a strikeout.

Kretzschmar's home run to right center in the second inning – his third of the year – got the Bears on the board first. With the home run, Kretzschmar extended his streak of reaching base safely to 14 games.

Two innings later, with the game tied 1-1, Dom Souto got a two-run rally started with a single to right field. Two batters later, Handron smashed his first career home run off Wildcats starter Aiden May (2-0).

May was able to get out of the fourth and lasted two more innings to earn the win. He went six complete innings, surrendering seven hits, three earned runs with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Green Jr. stole his eighth base of the year in a 1-for-4 effort while Carson Crawford joined Souto and Schulze with multiple hits on the day.
