Cal Sets Two New Records In 200 Medley, 800 Free On Opening Night OF NCAA Championships
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Records continued to fall on the second day of the NCAA Championships. Cal set new program records in the 200 free relay while
Destin Lasco set the American record in the 200 individual medley.
Lasco picked up his second All-American honors this weekend with a sensational performance in the 200 IM. Lasco finished second with a time of 1:38.10, besting the old American record set by Caeleb Dressel by 0.03. Arizona State's Leon Marchand took first with an NCAA record time of 1:36.34. Hugo Gonzalez had a tremendous race to capture third, he finished with a time of 1:39.00, just off his top time in the event.
In the 50 free, Cal had three swimmers earn All-American accolades. Björn Seeliger finished third with a time of 18.67,
Jack Alexy finished sixth with a time of 18.87 to earn First Team honors.
Liam Bell took fifth in the consolation final with a time of 18.96, 0.08 off his top time.
In the 500 free,
Gabriel Jett finished sixth in the A Final with a time of 4:12.59 to earn All-American honors.
Lucas Henveaux earned Honorable Mention All-American accolades by winning the consolation final. He finished with a time of 4:10.50, the third fastest time in program history.
In the 200 free relay, the Bears finished in second with a program-best time of 1:13.82. Seeliger led off the race with a split of 18.59, faster than his 50 in the individual race. Alexy went second with a blazing split of 18.12. Bell went third with a split of 18.59 followed by Lasco who swam an 18.52. Cal and the winner Florida, are the first two teams to get under 1:14 in the event. The Gators set an NCAA record with a time of 1:13.35.
Through seven events, the Golden Bears sit atop the team leaderboard with a score of 184. Texas is in second with 165 points followed by Arizona State with 154.
UP NEXT
Day three of the NCAA Championships will begin with the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 3-meter diving. The 400 IM is scheduled to begin at 10 am CT/8 am PT. The prelims will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be accessed here. The finals for the three events are scheduled to begin at 6 PM CT/4 PM PT.
