CORVALLIS, Ore. – The California baseball team (10-9, 2-6 Pac 12) evened the series with a 2-1 win at Oregon State (14-9, 2-6 Pac 12) on Saturday afternoon behind a dominant pitching effort from
Paulshawn Pasqualotto, who had his longest outing of the season, going five innings and giving up just one hit and zero runs. At one point, he retired eight straight batters. The Bears scored a run in the second and sixth innings which proved enough to get the win.
In the second inning
Jack Johnston hit a solo shot for his second home run of the season to put the Bears on the board first. He would end up going 2-3 on the day for his second multi-hit game of the year.
Dom Souto led off the sixth with a single to right center and later advanced to third off a
Rodney Green Jr. double. Souto was able to score the Bears' only other run of the game off a wild pitch from Jacob Kmatz.
The Beavers threatened in the bottom of the sixth by reaching first and second off consecutive walks with two outs.
Daniel Colwell came in from the bullpen and was able to get the Bears out of the inning with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Beavers had another chance to get back into the game with a runner on first with one out. Travis Bazzana hit a deep shot down the left field line that Johnston was able to track down and make the catch up against the wall.
In the bottom of the ninth, Oregon State opened the inning with consecutive singles to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners before a ground out allowed a run to score.
Tucker Bougie entered the game with a runner on first and second and was able to get the strikeout to seal the victory for the Bears and earn his first save of the season.
Pasqualotto (2-0) earned the win and Kmatz (1-4) was credited with the loss.
