Cal Falls In Series Finale

Arizona State Staves Off Sweep On Sunday At Levine-Fricke Field

BERKELEY – The California softball team came up short in a 4-2, eight-inning, loss in the series finale against Arizona State on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field.

The Bears (22-8-1, 4-4-1 Pac-12) were led by a 2-for-3 afternoon at the plate from Makena Smith. Alexa Milius came up with the game-winning two-run home run in the eighth for the Sun Devils (18-10, 2-4 Pac-12).

It was a pitcher's duel all afternoon, with the two teams each registering six hits and just two of them for extra bases. ASU got on the board in the third with an RBI groundout, but Cal had its first answer in the fourth. The Bears tied the game when Tianna Bell hit a pop fly that went off the glove of the Sun Devil second baseman, allowing pinch-runner D'Auna Johnson to score.

After the Sun Devils scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, Smith came through with her second hit of the day, an RBI single to plate Kennedy Thomas after she started the frame with a base hit. Cal wasn't able to rally in the home half of the eighth after ASU took its third lead of the game on the Milius homer.
