Sun Devils Take Game One

Cal Brings Tying Run To Plate In Ninth

BERKELEY – The Cal baseball team got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but could not scratch a run across as visiting Arizona State took game one of the three-game series 4-1 on Friday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium.
 
The Golden Bears and Sun Devils combined to strikeout 23 times as the pitchers had the advantage on Friday. Cal (10-11, 2-8 Pac-12) finished the game with one run on three hits, the Bears also had five walks. Cal had their chances but went 0-for-14 with runners on base.
 
Arizona State (18-8, 6-1) finished the evening with four runs on 14 hits. Several times ASU had chances to blow the game open but were just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.  
 
Christian Becerra (0-1) took the loss. He had his best stuff on Friday evening striking out a career-high seven batters. He went five complete, scattering eight eights with two runs surrendered.  
 
The Sun Devils scored two in the fifth to break a scoreless tie when three-straight singles and an error allowed Nu'u Contrades and Ryan Campos to score. The Bears got out of the jam when Becerra got Luke Keaschall to strike out swinging and Caleb Lomavita threw out Campos attempting to steal.
 
ASU added two more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Willie Cano and an RBI single by Kien Vu.
 
Rodney Green Jr. singled into shallow center field to begin the bottom of the sixth inning. He eventually came in on the sacrifice fly to deep center off the bat of Peyton Schulze. Green Jr. finished the night 1-for-4 with a run. Lomavita and Max Handron had the other hits for the Bears.  
 
Ross Dunn (4-1) got the win, he tossed 5.1 innings, scattering three hits with eight strikeouts. The save went to Owen Stevenson (2) who struck out the side after allowing the tying run to come to the plate.

Game two of the series will take place tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Game two will be televised on Pac-12 Network with Ben Ross calling the game live from Stu Gordon Stadium.
