BERKELEY – The Cal baseball team wasted little time putting runs on the board and finished the night with an exclamation point, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 14-2 over visiting Nevada on Monday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Cal (13-15) scored five runs in the first two innings, more than enough run support for starter
Andres Galan (2-1) who tossed his second-straight quality start.
Galan went six complete and scattered three hits with one walk while striking out a career-high nine batters. He didn't allow a hit until the top of the third inning and punctuated his brilliant start by striking out the side in the sixth.
In the seventh, the Golden Bears handed the ball to
Daniel Colwell and
Vaughn Mauterer. Colwell tossed two complete, allowing three hits and two runs with a pair of strikeouts. Mauterer closed it out in the ninth, recording a pair of strikeouts.
Nevada (13-18) countered with eight pitchers. Starter Alejandro Murillo (1=2) took the loss, he allowed two runs on one hit in his one inning of work.
In the first two innings, the Bears loaded the bases twice. In the bottom of the first Cal loaded them up with one out for
Peyton Schulze who singled through the left side to score
Max Handron and
Rodney Green Jr. In the next inning, Cal loaded the bags for Green Jr. who doubled down the right field line scoring
Jack Johnston and
Max Handron. Crawford scored the third run of the game on a sacrifice fly by
Kade Kretzschmar.
The Bears added a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth but blew the game open in the seventh when Cal scored seven runs on five hits – most of the damage coming after the Wolf Pack recorded two outs. Cal got RBI doubles from Crawford, Green Jr., and Kretzschmar in the frame, and Schulze had two singles in the inning.
Cal's two through five hitters went a combined 8-for-15 with seven runs scored and 12 RBI. Green Jr. went 2-for-3 with four RBI, he also stole three bases giving him 23 on the year. Schulze went 3-for-5 with three RBI, and Kretzschmar was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
UNR's Nolan Wilson finished the night 1-for-4, he had a two-run double in the seventh to score Billy Ham and Jackson Waller for the only runs of the game for the Wolf Pack.
