SALT LAKE CITY – An explosive seventh inning was the difference as Utah evened up the series, winning game two 13-10 on Saturday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark. Cal's offense scored 10 runs and pounded out a season-high 17 hits, but it was not enough.
Cal (15-16, 4-13 Pac-12) got at least one hit from eight different players with five Golden Bears collecting multiple hits.
Rodney Green Jr. had his second four-game game of the season going went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
Carson Crawford went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs driven in.
Kade Kretzschmar went 3-for-6 with two runs batted in.
Dom Souto drove in three and hit his fourth home run of the year.
The Bears had a strong day in RBI situations, going 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position, however, Cal couldn't take advantage when they loaded the bases, going just 1-for-4 on the day with the bags full, failing to put Utah away.
Utah (13-20-1, 4-11-1 Pac-12) scored 13 runs on 13 hits. They scored three in the third and three in the fourth, but it was a five-run seventh that gave them the lead for good. The Utes added two more in the eighth to put the game away.
After taking the lead early, Cal briefly took lead back in the top half of the seventh, scoring five runs on six hits. The big hit was the two-run shot by Souto after
Nathan Manning led off the inning with a walk. Crawford had an RBI double in the frame, and the rally ended with an RBI single by Kretzschmar.
In the home half of the inning,
Joe Williams allowed the first four batters to reach.
Robert Aivazian (0-2) came in to replace Williams. After getting an out via a sacrifice bunt, Matt Flaharty hit a double to left center that scored Carson Bodily and Davis Cop. Kai Roberts followed that with a double to right center to score Flaharty.
Aivazian went 1.1 in relief, allowing four this, three runs with a walk. He was one of five pitchers on the day for the Bears.
Paulshawn Pasqualotto got the start and went 5.0 complete, allowing five hits, and six runs, with five walks and five strikeouts.
Earning the win for Utah was relief pitcher Randon Hosert (1-2) who came in to get the final out of the seventh inning for the Utes. Starter Merit Jones went 4.1 allowing eight hits, and four runs (all earned) with two walks and five strikeouts. Micah Ashman earned his sixth save of the year throwing two scoreless innings.
