Cal Begins Four-Game Homestand Tuesday Night

BERKELEY – The California baseball team returns home for four games before beginning a season-long eight-game road trip, starting with a nonconference clash against cross-bay rival USF on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday's game will be streamed on the Cal Live Stream with Jim Darby calling the action live from Stu Gordon Stadium.
 
Cal (16-16) is coming off an impressive week, going 4-1 with a Pac-12 road series win over Utah. The Golden Bears enter this week with an 8-7 record at home after defeating Nevada at Stu Gordon Stadium 14-2 last Monday. USF (14-17) is coming off a series loss at home against Pepperdine and has lost four of its last five, including a two-game series at Oregon last week. The Dons are 4-10 on the road this year.

  • The Bears are coming off a 4-1 week after taking two of three from Utah on the road. The Bears hit at blistering .322 as a team last week (59-for-183) with 24 extra-base hits (17 doubles, 2 triples, and 5 home runs.)
  • At home this season, the Bears have hit just .217 – but have slugged 25 home runs. On the mound, the Bears have a staff ERA of 4.70 at Stu Gordon Stadium.
  • Tuesday starter Andres Galan is 2-2 with a 5.21 ERA on the year. However, he is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA at home this season and boasts a 15/2 K/BB ratio. Last time out, he went six innings,  scattering four hits with a walk and a career-high nine strikeouts in the win over Nevada.
  • Junior Max Handron has settled in nicely at the top of the order. As the leadoff hitter, Handron is hitting .333 and has a .429 on-base percentage. The Bears are 4-1 in those games.
  • Senior Kade Kretzschmar was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week this week. The Carlsbad, California, native hit .714 with five extra-base hits – two home runs, three doubles – in 21 at-bats while scoring six runs and driving in 10. The two home runs give him eight on the year, a new career-high.
  • Rodney Green Jr. stole six more bags in six attempts last week. Green Jr. how has 24 stolen bases in 26 attempts this season. He is tied for 12th in the nation in total steals and seventh in the nation in steals per game at 0.75.
  • Milestone Watch: Several Cal players have reached or are nearing individual milestones.
    • Kade Kretzschmar had his 100th career hit against Utah on Friday. He has 37 this season and 70 in three seasons at Dartmouth.
    • Caleb Lomavita is three hits shy of 100 for his career. After going 3-for-4 on Sunday at Utah he has 34 hits on the year.
    • Rodney Green Jr. has 46 RBI and is four shy of 50 for his career. RJ is third on the team with 25 RBI this season.
    • With his two RBI on Sunday, sophomore Peyton Schulze now has 50 for his career. His 30 RBI this season is a career-best and leads the team.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Tuesday will be the 179th time the Bears and Dons have squared off. All time, Cal owns a 130-48 mark against USF. Last season, the Dons took the only matchup of the season, winning 14-1 on April 19 at Stu Gordon Stadium.
 
UP NEXT
Cal will stay at the friendly confines when Oregon comes to Stu Gordon Stadium for a three-game Pac-12 series starting Friday at 7:05 p.m.  Friday and Sunday's games will be televised on Pac-12 Network, and Saturday's game will be streamed on Pac-12 Plus.
