STANFORD, Calif. – The California softball team dropped a nail-biter in a 2-1, eight-inning, loss to No. 8 Stanford in game one of the Big Series on Friday at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
After the game-winning run was initially called out on the field with two down on a relay from left field to the plate, the call was overturned after it went to a replay review.
Haylei Archer went the distance for the Golden Bears (29-13-1, 6-9-1 Pac-12) giving up just one earned run with three strikeouts.
Facing Stanford ace NiJaree Canady, who came into the game with one earned run allowed in 58 innings pitched on the season, the Bears struggled to get anything going offensively with Canady perfect through five.
Cal, however, finally broke through in the sixth with a two-out rally.
Kennedy Thomas singled to third base and
Tatum Anzaldo came up clutch with the RBI double to the wall in right center, tying the score at 1-1. It was Canady's first run allowed since March 18 at Oregon.
The Bears had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh after
Makena Smith drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt but a flyout and strikeout ended the threat. Â Â Â Â Â
